Still, when it comes to well-earned stardom, the season's prize goes to House's brilliant star, Hugh Laurie. Even those of us who adored Laurie's work in such British comic wonders as Jeeves and Wooster and the Black Adder series never knew he had House in him. Thank goodness the producers did.

Because after "E.R.'s" touchy-feely Dr. Carter (Noah Wyle), "House's" Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) and the knife-happy surgical interns of "Grey's Anatomy" are shock therapy.
Don't get me wrong.
I love "House." (OK, I love Hugh Laurie, and "House" is where they're keeping him for the moment.)
I'm also hooked on the character-driven drama of "Grey's Anatomy," and especially on "The Nazi" (Chandra Wilson), a fireplug of a senior resident who's one of the few doctors on the show I'd want near me with anything sharper than a butter knife.
But if viewers aren't already concerned about American medicine, weekly doses of these series should have them reaching for whatever happy pill with-low-risk-of-sexual-side-effects the drug companies are pushing at the moment.
Take Dr. House, who sees no point in talking to patients, much less listening to them.
Most doctors with his approach would probably blame pressures from HMOs for giving them less time with patients, but House, whose orders, however expensive, are apparently never questioned by Blue Cross, has a simpler explanation: "Everybody lies."
That credo's so effective that week after week, he and his young disciples nearly kill a patient with one or more mistreatments, before trial and error leads them to the real culprit.
