House Season 4 Episode Guide

“I honestly don’t claim to know him well. That’s why I’m here; that’s part of the fascination, the not knowing. If one knew, if one could explain in a few sentences who this character is and what makes him tick, it would feel sort of glib, somehow. It would feel two-dimensional. Shallow, in fact. That’s three-dimensional, but very thin.” - Hugh Laurie, on Greg House.

WITHOUT THE HELP OF A TEAM, HOUSE SCRAMBLES TO DIAGNOSE A WOMAN AFTER A BUILDING COLLAPSES ON HER ON THE SEASON PREMIERE OF "HOUSE" TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, ON FOX

When an office building collapses, House has to work fast to diagnose a young woman, Megan, who survived the disaster. Due to her injuries, Megan's only form of communication is blinking. As Megan's condition worsens, Cuddy puts pressure on House to hire a new team, but House defiantly ignores her, and Wilson resorts to desperate measures and hits House where he knows it will hurt. HOUSE AUDITIONS POTENTIAL NEW TEAM MEMBERS AND TREATS A FEMALE ASTRONAUT WHO SEES WHAT SHE HEARS ON "HOUSE" TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2, ON FOX

House has relented in regard to interviewing potential team members, but he's doing it his own way. He has called in all 40 applicants for the open spots on his team (including guest stars Olivia Wilde, Kal Penn, Peter Jacobson, Anne Dudek and Edi Gathegi), each numbered individually by runners' bibs, and puts them to the test in a Darwinian trial period. As he drills the fellows and arbitrarily fires some along the way, he is approached by a fighter pilot named Greta, a candidate for NASA's astronaut training program. Greta suffers from a neurological disorder in which she is converting visual images to sound, or hearing with her eyes. Knowing that NASA would reject any possibility of her becoming an astronaut if they knew of her problem, Greta begs House to treat her in secret. Keeping her identity private, House takes the case to his fellowship candidates and pits them against one another to come up with an accurate diagnosis. Meanwhile, House is ruffled when he thinks he sees Cameron, Chase and Foreman in the hospital hallways in "The Right Stuff" episode of HOUSE airing Tuesday, Oct. 2 (9:0010:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (HOU-402) (TV-14 D)

HOUSE DIVIDES HIS REMAINING FELLOWSHIP CANDIDATES INTO TWO TEAMS FOR SOME HEALTHY COMPETITION ON "HOUSE" TUESDAY, OCTOBER 9, ON FOX

The final 10 fellowship candidates compete ferociously when House splits them into two teams by gender. They are assigned to diagnose and treat a wheelchair-bound man with muscular atrophy who is slowly suffocating. As the two teams are trying to one-up each other, complications arise when one team treats the patient but doesn't follow through to make sure their treatment was executed. While the students are busy with their assignment, House experiments on himself to see what happens in the moments when people hover between life and death. Meanwhile, Foreman runs his own team of fellows in his new job at another hospital, and resorts to using a very "House-like" treatment to help a patient in the "97 Seconds" episode of HOUSE airing Tuesday, Oct. 9 (9:0010:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (HOU-403) (TV-14 D, L)

'House' story line keeps the actors on edge' - By Peter Johnson, USA TODAY

THE SEVEN FINAL CANDIDATES TREAT A PATIENT WHO BELIEVES SHE CAN TALK TO THE DEAD ON "HOUSE" TUESDAY, OCTOBER 16, ON FOX

When a 20-year-old funeral home cosmetician, Irene, has a massive seizure, she hallucinates that the cadavers in the funeral home have come to life, House and the remaining seven fellowship candidates must figure out why. As the team runs tests, they realize Irene is carrying on conversations with her long-deceased mother, who she believes is sitting in the room with her. Thinking something in the funeral home may have made Irene sick, House sends the candidates on some less-than-desirable investigative missions, one of which involves a visit to a graveyard. As Irene's symptoms become more life-threatening and her ghostly visions more vivid, House surmises that connecting with Irene's dead mother might be the best route to diagnosing her illness. Meanwhile, Foreman finds his "House-like" reputation has preceded him as he interviews for a new job, and House must narrow down the candidates from seven to six in the "Guardian Angels" episode of HOUSE airing Tuesday, Oct. 16 (9:0010:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. HOUSE AND THE FELLOWSHIP CANDIDATES TREAT A PATIENT WITH AN UNKNOWN IDENTITY WHO MIRRORS THE BEHAVIOR OF THE PEOPLE AROUND HIM ON "HOUSE" TUESDAY, OCTOBER 30, ON FOX

The team takes on the case of a man who collapsed while being mugged. When the man complains of new symptoms that do not fit his initial admission profile, the team suspects he is a hypochondriac. As Mr. X continues to fall ill with symptoms unrelated to his neurological disorder, Foreman and the remaining six fellows are assigned to keep watch, and are bemused as they see their own behavioral idiosyncrasies reflected through him. CUDDY ORDERS HOUSE TO MAKE A FINAL DECISION ON HIS TEAM ON "HOUSE" TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 27, ON FOX

When Cuddy puts the pressure on House to choose the final members of his team, House deliberately assigns the candidates to a particularly challenging case an uncooperative, over-the-hill former punk rock star with a history of drug abuse and civil disobedience. House informs the candidates their potential future depends on correctly diagnosing the patient. As the candidates race to find out if the patient is ailing due to drug abuse, an underlying disease or an unknown condition, House keeps a running tally of their efforts, making a few arbitrary point deductions along the way. Meanwhile, Wilson informs a former patient whom he had previously diagnosed with terminal cancer that he is going to live, and the news throws a wrench in the man's carpe-diem lifestyle in the "Games" episode of HOUSE airing Tuesday, Nov. 27 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. Ausiello: Did you hear? Christmas has been extended through January! Due to a strike-related scheduling issue, House's holiday episode won't air until Jan. 29! Crazy, huh? And here's an added scoopbit: Helping to spread some of that belated holiday cheer is none other than West Wing's Janel Moloney. Ausiello on House

Question: Do you have any scoop on the post-Super Bowl episode of House? — Suzanne
Ausiello: Yes, but it's a little bit of a bummer. As I first scooped in this week's Ausiello Report vodcast, a planned two-part episode that was going to air after the big game and then continue the following Tuesday was scrapped due to the strike. Instead, a regular eppy guest-starring Oscar-winner Mira Sorvino will take its place. Not to rub salt in the wound or anything, but I am obliged to add that, based on my chat last week with exec producer Katie Jacobs, I suspect the original two-parter would've advanced either the Huddy or Hameron storyline in a big way. Speaking of which, as promised, here's what Ms. Jacobs had to say about how Chase and Cameron might fold back into House's team in '08: "The question is not really when, it's how, insofar as they're now each in their own domain doing really well. But is it bugging Cameron that she's not really in on all of House's business? And how is it for Chase to be head of a department? And when those things become clearer, then I think we'll know what the hospital is going to look like." Meaning that in the end, the new doctors and the old doctors will end up working together, right? Right? "That I can't say for sure," she demurs. "R

Similarly, Hugh Laurie couldn’t offer any insight as to how his character’s ongoing Vicodin addiction will play out. “That, I’m afraid, I can’t answer,” he apologized, “only because I am in the dark. We are only halfway through our second show, and so I already read the first three scripts of this season."

In closing, I must make mention of the question I asked as much for my own amusement as anything, about Stephen Fry recently popping up elsewhere on the network’s schedule. I addressed Mr. Laurie and said, “When a former collaborator of yours turned up in a recurring role on ‘Bones,’ were you fearing an ad campaign saying, ‘Fry and Laurie: together again on FOX’”?

He grinned and admitted, “Well, it was an absolutely fantastic experience, actually, for both of us, after 20-odd years of working together, to wind up 8,000 miles away from where we started, in two trailers that were only 50 yards apart. It was a very peculiar thing and a very enjoyable thing. And, yes, we looked back at some happy days and did actually talk about it, as we always do, in a very vague kind of way, we talk about reconvening and carrying on where we left off. But I don’t know in what form. But I hope one day we will. Possibly on a stage, actually. That’s our next thought.”

Oh, I’m such a geek about British comedy. When he said that, I totally got chills.

“Though House may appear to be an abrasive and awkward and occasionally abusive companion, I think people are entertained by him. He is a game that is worth the candle. Do you have that expression over here, or are people just frowning at me? You don’t know? Okay. Dammit. How would Americans say that? He’s a character who is worth putting up with. First of all, the fact that he saves lives — that’s a pretty endearing quality. If you’re staring death in the face, it’s a very endearing quality. His honesty, his anarchy — I think these are attractive qualities, though possibly best seen at a certain remove. Maybe through a television, actually, may be the best way to view it.”

How does Laurie interact with his fans? "I don't," he jokes. "I have a little man [who does it for me]." On a serious note, he says, "I think people are entertained by House; he's worth putting up with. He saves lives. That's a pretty endearing quality. If you're staring death in the face, it's [actually] a very endearing quality."

From TV with meeVee: "House" In Da House: Talking To Hugh Laurie

Maureen Ryan of the Chicago Tribune did a nice write-up of the press tour, including alot of upcoming House info. Spoilers abound, but this from Hugh:

“I will add that the first three scripts that I read of this season are not only three of the best ‘House’ scripts I've ever read, they're three of the best scripts I've ever read,” Laurie said. “It may be that in the execution of it, we'll make a dreadful hash of it and you'll go, ‘Well, I don't see what the fuss was about. That was a terrible piece of television.’ But purely as scripts, I find them absolutely phenomenal.

“I've never read anything that so ambitiously tries to mix broad comedy and gut-wrenching tragedy and philosophical musings and bizarre literary references all in the space of five seconds,” Laurie continued. “The speed with which it jumps from tone to tone is quite phenomenally ambitious.”

Micheal Ausiello of TV Guide has been blogging the press tour. Read his comments from the House panel this afternoon, as well as quotes from Hugh.
