Just not funny

During the Fox session on “House,” reporters kept trying to get star Hugh Laurie to tell some funny anecdotes. Finally, he explained his lack of chuckle-worthy true tales.

“I’m very conscious of the world being divided into people to whom anecdotes happen and to whom anecdotes don’t happen,” the British Laurie says. “And I just belong to the non-anecdote part of the world. Anecdotes don’t happen to me. Some people go and fetch dry cleaning and they can get 20 minutes of stand-up out of it. It just doesn’t happen to me and I’m sorry about that.”

From Entertainment Tonight, a little tidbit: (look for a possible clip on air Monday, Aug. 1 )

The Doctor's in the 'House' For Fox's Fall Season

HUGH LAURIE, who plays the irascible Dr. Gregory House on the Emmy-nominated FOX series, "House," is the son of a doctor in real life, so he was raised with a respect for the knowledge that doctors have.

"I am not squeamish," he shares. "Blood and gore is never a problem for me. I have been healthy in my life. The only thing that was a problem, I had to do one show in which I have hay fever which hangs over me for the run of the show. Just generating the symptoms, that did penetrate. I have never been faced with a real crisis."

HOUSE CALL: Beautiful Sela Ward (Once And Again), who joined the cast of House late last season as the ex-Mrs. House, was asked about her instant chemistry with Emmy-nominated series lead Hugh Laurie. The two actors really convey the closeness of their characters. How do they conjure up that "palatable past history?" the critic from New York asked.

Ward had the answer. "We sleep together." Pause. "Is that wrong?"

The critic from New York could not leave it at that. "Does that work better for one of you than the other?"

"Easy now," Laurie said.

He went on to credit a "very sound, true script" for that "palatable past history" thing. "We are professionals," he continued, suddenly getting very English.

July 30, 2005 - Wireimage has a couple of pictures ( first two below ) posted from the Fox TCA Party, held at the Santa Monica Pier, July 29. Look for more later!

From AOL Television - Live from TCA:

FOX Day One: The Doctor Is In... a Bad Mood

'House'

The 411: Dr. Gregory House is a brilliant infectious disease specialist who is brutally honest and a bit of a jerk.
The Crew: Created by David Shore ('NYPD Blue') and executive producers Katie Jacobs ('Gideon's Crossing), Paul Attanasio ('Quiz Show') and Bryan Singer ('X-Men')

The Players: Hugh Laurie ('Blackadder'), Lisa Edelstein ('The West Wing'), Omar Epss ('ER'), Robert Sean Leonard ('Dead Poets Society'), Jennifer Morrison ('Mr. & Mrs. Smith'), Jesse Spencer ('Uptown Girls') and Sela Ward ('Once and Again')
I came into 'House' a little late, so I've only seen a few episodes, but I really liked what I saw. It's loaded with good writing, good acting and compelling stories.

I was not familiar with Hugh Laurie before. He was one of those guys that looked familiar, but I couldn't place him. Thanks to this panel I found out that he is a wickedly funny guy who has starred in some famously funny Brit comedies. During the panel discussion, he was very quick with the jokes.

One journalist asked if Laurie had any funny doctor experiences. Laurie responded, "No, I really haven’t. But then nothing actually funny has ever happened to me, ever. I'm very conscious of the world being divided into people to whom anecdotes happen and to whom anecdotes don't happen. And I just belong to the non-anecdotes part of the world. Some people go and fetch dry cleaning, and they can get 20 minutes of stand-up out of that."
'House' Season Two updates:

* Sela Ward is signed up for 7 out of the 13 new episodes

* Elvis Costello is recording a new version of Christina Aguilera's song 'Beautiful' and it will debut on episode two. (He will not appear in the episode. He must be too busy with guest apperances on 'Two and a Half Men.' Yes, he has guested on that show along with Sean "I-Used-to-be- Spicolli-But-Now-I'm-a-Serious-Actor" Penn.)

[Excerpt]

LOS ANGELES - LL Cool J will be in the ``House,'' Ashton Kutcher will time-travel to the '70s for a spell and Dennis Rodman, Alec Baldwin and Richard Dean Anderson - TV's ``MacGyver'' - will be among those stopping by Springfield this fall on Fox.

Network executives revealed these tidbits as they continued to promote the fall schedule yesterday at the semi-annual gathering of the Television Critics Association.

The rapper - real name James Todd Smith - will appear as a death-row inmate with, naturally, a mysterious disease in the season opener of the medical drama ``House.'' Elvis Costello will appear in the second episode as himself and will sing. Sela Ward (``Once and Again'') will be back for as many as seven episodes as Dr. House's former paramour Stacy Warner.

Asked why she thought viewers embraced Hugh Laurie's prickly doctor, Ward said, ``It's the irreverence of the character, and he is gorgeous and he's so out of the box.''

I've had a couple of emails regarding the video clips - some of them are quite large files and require patience to downlaod - they also require the latest Quicktime software - link on video page. You might have better luck if you right click and "save target as" - this will download the clip to your computer. Other than that, they should work!

(I hope to add more this week) Also, screencaps and video clip of the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (from Nov. 9, 2004) Apologies for the poor quality screencaps - the tape was a copy of a copy of a copy etc.

More from the event from heraldnet.com:

"Hugh Laurie, accepting his award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Drama, told the roomful of critics: "I have held the belief that television critics are some of the wisest and kindest people in our community, and with this (award), you have shown the wisdom of Solomon. Although I know a lot of you think that Solomon was rather two-dimensional."

From Reuters:

Hugh Laurie, star of Fox's hot new medical drama "House," was on hand to accept his win for individual achievement in drama. After declaring his belief that television critics are some of the "wisest, kindest members of our community," Laurie noted that the last time he won an acting award was when he was 9, with his parents seated in the audience.

"I hope wherever they are, my parents are as proud as I am," Laurie quipped.
