July 31, 2006 - Fox promo ad for House and new series Standoff, starring previous House guest star Ron Livingston (TB or not TB). It's been airing nightly. This one was shown during Hell's Kitchen. Video clip and a few screencaps.

July 30, 2006 - A few blurbs from the July 31 Issue of TV Guide I forgot to add - and thanks to Stephanie for the reminder! Also thanks to Stephanie for scanning the mention of Hugh's response to being asked to present an Emmy. Apparently this is missing from many subscription issues of the magazine, but can be found on page 13 of newstand issues. It was probably added at the last minute.

For those of you who have never seen a call sheet, here is a scan of one from last year's episode "Sex Kills." Hugh (# 1) had to report to work at 3:00 PM for make-up and be on set at 3:45 PM. It was Hugh's/the last day of filming that episode - WF means work finish. SWF mean start work/ finish on the same day. You often see that next to one day guest and co-stars names. Time permitting, they were going to shoot a scene from episode 2.012 as well. Shows often double-up episodes, meaning they shoot scenes from two episodes on the same day. It's also not uncommon to finish one episode then begin another on the same day. Also, episodes are not always filmed in the order they were written. Location and guest star scheduling can play into this, as well as rewrites or the need to work around publicity appearances etc. You will notice the box on the right that has the cast doing a read-through of "Clueless" at lunch. Lunch that day would likely have begun between 5:00 and 6:00 PM, based on the crew call of 11:00 PM.

July 29, 2006 - Generous Jonathan has sent these photos of Hugh from his upcoming MONDAY appearance on Inside the Actor's Studio. Copyright to Virginia Sherwood/Bravo. Many thanks!

What does House executive producuer TIVO? From the July 24 issue of the Hollywood Reporter.

This from the July 26th issue of Variety on House's chance of taking home the Emmy - why it could, why it might not:

Critic Tom O'Neil offers suggestions on how to fix the Emmys. From the LA Times Envelope. Excerpt about Hugh:

One of America's most famous TV critics told me the other day, "I wouldn't be upset about Christopher Meloni's nomination if he had to submit three episodes to Emmy judges. If that was the rule, he never would've gotten nominated over Hugh Laurie and James Gandolfini. But he had one biggie. I'm not saying that Meloni isn't a fine actor. He's very good. But on a consistent basis, show to show, Hugh Laurie gives a better performance and everybody knows it. Submitting just one episode isn't fair."

Press Tour tidbits from the Winnipeg Sun:

Despite being tricked into an operation last season, Hugh Laurie says his cranky super doc character hasn't completely thrown away his cane. "There's a 50/50 chance his symptoms will come back," Laurie reminded us, hinting he'll be limping again soon.

Laurie recently made headlines when it was reported in the trades that he'll be pulling down a whopping $275,000 US per episode next season. House is easily Fox's biggest drama hit, drawing close to 25 million viewers a week.

A humble and private man, Laurie winced when I brought up the big dough. He already refuses to acknowledge that House is a hit. "I'm superstitious," he says. Does the big money add to the pressure of keeping it a hit? Laurie, rolled his eyes, hunched his shoulders, looked at his feet. "You can write that the question made him very uncomfortable," he said. So noted.

July 26, 2006 - TCA Press Tour snippet from USA Today: [Excerpt]

House's Lisa Edelstein, who plays hospital administrator Lisa Cuddy, had a little naughtiness on her mind, too. She suggested how her character's relationship with House (Laurie) should play out: "I'd say we should have a one-night stand that fails miserably. But that's just me."

Laurie said he doesn't want to know what's going to happen on the show. "I don't even want to know what's going to happen after lunch," he joked.

When asked how life has changed since the show got so big, he said, "If I had a life, I'm sure it would be very different. I go from 6 in the morning till 10 at night — work, work, work. Then I watch a TiVo'd version of American Chopper while I eat my cold spaghetti, and I go to bed. That's my life."

When the show was on hiatus, he did "a big fat nothing. I went back to England, and I walked the dog and played the piano."

Bravo has begun running ads for Hugh's appearance on Inside the Actor's Studio - Monday, July 31st. This clip was taken during Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, aired on Tuesday, July 25th.

Hugh's Speech - Source: Rich Heldenfels

''I never believed for one moment that my respect and admiration for television critics could grow ever greater. It has. This is partly because I'm not from these parts. I am from England, as you can probably tell, from the fact that I've just told you. ... The relationship between artist and critic (in England) is very different. Over there, the artist is, if you like, the mouse. And the critic is the vicious sociopath who shatters dreams. It strikes me as a very different setup here and for that, I and everyone else on the show ''House'' is extremely grateful....

''As for this award, a couple of weeks ago I had the good fortune to attend the U.S. Grand Prix in Indianapolis, won, as usual, by Michael Schumacher ... He has been world racing champion, Formula One, for the last seven years. But even his most ardent admirers would have to admit that it's got something to do with the fact that he has the fastest car. Elizabeth Taylor could probably get a podium place. ... People compete with unequal equipment. If, for example, it's a running race and Michael Schumacher began the race with running spikes and the man next to him had lace-up Oxfords, and the man next to him was running in stilettos and the man on the outside lane was wearing a pair of West Highland Terriers. ... But so it is with the business of acting. ... I feel very much in the position of the man who has got a very, very fast car. ... I am, every day that I go to work, deeply sensible of the honor I have to sit at the wheel and drive this wonderful character called House.''

This year's ceremony, hosted by 24's Mary Lynn Rajskub, had several cast members from Earl and Grey's on hand to celebrate their wins, with Hugh Laurie in the House to accept his second consecutive award for Individual Achievement in Drama, as well as Steve Carell, doubly honoured for The Office as Outstanding Comedy and himself for Individual Achievement in same. The Toronto Star

"Hugh Laurie from "House," who also won last year, won again this year for "Individual Achievement in Drama." He's a funny man, seemed to appreciate his award and seemed to tolerate being talked to." Tim Goodman, SFGate.com

Excerpt from TV Guide's Mike Ausiello regarding the Emmys:

"No, my problem is with this special blue-ribbon panel. The folks who sat in that screening room on June 24 and 25 and watched Hugh Laurie work his magic on House and still deemed him unworthy of a nomination. Geena Davis is a fabulous actress, but even her best episode of Commander in Chief doesn't hold a candle to Edie Falco's heart-wrenching breakdown scene after Tony got shot. And although I don't agree with Lauren Graham's decision to submit the deeply unsatisfying GG season finale to the panel, her work in that episode eclipsed anything Stockard Channing did on the abysmal Out of Practice. Some Emmy voters themselves are aghast at their peers' extraordinary bad taste. Just hours after the nominations were announced, I received an e-mail from an Academy member who admitted to being "totally ashamed" and "embarrassed" by the outcome. "There is so much wrong with the nominations, I can't wrap my head around it," wrote the NATAS member, who asked that her name be withheld because she's not stupid. "This isn't just a case of conflicting taste, this is like the Golden Globe nominations during the Pia Zadora era. I just can't apologize enough for this debacle."

July 22, 2006 - Ads from Fox and NBC Universal congratulating their nominees for TCA Awards, to be given out tomorrow, Sunday the 23rd. Both are from the July 21 issue of the Hollywood Reporter. Variety also featured the ads. CAA - Hugh's US agency - also placed a double page ad congratulating all of their clients who were nominated.

Hugh got a big fat raise for his hard work on House, as well as a one year contract extension. From the Futon Critic:

HOUSE (FOX) - Star Hugh Laurie has reportedly received a pay bump into the $275,000-$300,000 per episode range, up from his current mid-five figure salary. The actor had been working to renegotiate his contract with producer NBC Universal Television for the past two months. In addition to the new salary (partially funded by FOX itself), Laurie will also receive a small stake in the backend of "House" as well as extend his current contract (believed to be six years) for an additional year.

Summer 2006 Critics Poll: A Photo Finish at Top of Ballot. House came in 5th his year:

Meanwhile, Fox's medical drama "House" continued to climb in the standings, landing at No. 5. "Just when we think we've seen it all, the next episode is bigger, more shocking and more compelling than the last one," said Victor Balta of The Herald in Everett, Wash. An Evening with House

July 10, 2006 - Marykir was able to find a file of Hugh's short interview at the US Grand Prix in Indianapolis last weekend. ITV nabbed him and spoke to him briefly. She has generously offered hl.net access to the clip. I've posted her .mov version here. The .mov file as well as an AVI file are on her site, along with lots of screencaps. I'll do some caps to archive on this site in the next couple of days.

marykir.com is filled with other great House/Hugh related vids that she, as well as other fans have collected. New fans of House might be interested to see some of the first season preview ads supplied by amysusanne. marykir.com has really kept up with the Emmy commentary from the various infotainment shows, so if you are interested in Emmy chatter regarding House, check it out. Marykir has also donated this Jun 2002 "What's On TV" 1 article about Spooks to hl.net. Thanks so much MK!

Jonathan has very kindly sent these episode stills from season 2. They are similar to some we've seen, but slightly different. Hugs to Jonathan ;-)

TVWeek.com (Television Weekly) features a nice article describing the Emmy voting process and why it is that some actors were nominated and others weren't. This excerpt might help to illuminate why Hugh might not have been nominated, even though nearly everyone agrees he should have been:

"In the four lead actor and actress in a comedy and drama series categories, panelists were asked to judge from the top 15 vote-getters.

In addition, the lead acting categories were expanded to include panelists from the casting and directing ranks. In the past, acting nominations came solely from academy members who were actors. This dynamic made the single episodes submitted by the potential nominees crucial, Mr. Askin said.

"The people who were doing the judging were tasked with sitting down and watching the tapes that were submitted," Mr. Askin said. "It really depends on the judges' viewing of that episode compared to the other episodes they saw. It is not a body of work comparison. Some of this comes down to the episodes that were submitted."
