May 31, 2005 - The Emmy ad for House was published in the Hollywood Reporter today as part of their 2005 Emmy Watch Preview issue. House is considered to have a decent shot at a nomination, but isn't considered a front-runner. Hugh Laurie is listed as a favorite for best actor in a drama - along with several other actors.

That probably won't be a problem for Fox's first-year hit "House," which has carved out a niche as a unique medical drama centered by a doctor (Hugh Laurie) who is as much a misanthropic anti-hero as he is a brilliant medicine man. "House" is considered to have a pretty fair chance at a series nomination, particularly in light of the increasingly strong ratings momentum it has generated in its post-"American Idol" time slot.

"House" co-creator/executive producer David Shore maintains that he's proud of his show, Emmy noms or no, and harbors no expectations about it being singled out for honors this year, aside from an acting nomination for Laurie.

"We started out this season with really great reviews and a positive buzz," Shore says. "Our goal is to get so successful that people begin to dismiss us as being not as good as we used to be; if an Emmy nomination is part of that equation, we'll take it."

Look for Hugh Laurie to be on one of the covers of TV Guide next week (June 5). He is featured as one of Television's sexiest men who co-stars dish about what makes them sexy. This is what Sela Ward says about him:

"Hugh is a formidable man. He has a lot of power. He's very tall, with those steely blue eyes that can be so piercing. He's got that English reserve, which is mysterious. He's incredibly intelligent, but he's also got a tremendous sense of humor. In order to keep House's remarks from being too bitter or nasty, an actor has to understand the humor in it. Hugh does. With him it's never ugly; it's refreshing. And House is such a great character, because he's not compliant with social mores or codes of behavior. He's an adult rebel — the James Dean of our generation. He represents what people wish they could say or do, and that's very attractive." — Sela Ward

May 29, 2005 - MSNBC featured clips from House and an interview with Hugh Laurie during their Hot List segment. Video clip [14.4 MB] and screencaps.

The Chicago Tribune featured a nice article about Hugh.

This mention of House from The Chattanoogan:

Three, is the medical drama series called House, which comes on right after American Idol – an embarrassment of riches. It features the actor Hugh Laurie in the role of a curmudgeonly, irascible, cynical, and extremely talented doctor in a New Jersey Hospital who solves one difficult medical case after another with the help of three residents. They are the targets of his constant scorn, derision, general mistreatment, and encyclopedic knowledge of the wide range and variety of human malady. In other words, he is the kind of guy you would hate to love, but that we need more of in key places. In other words, it borders on pure fantasy.

House also sports the most pronounced TV character limp since Chester in Gunsmoke.

House ended the season having to effect a cure of a mysterious disease inhabiting the husband of his former lover, played by Sela Ward, whom he has never quite gotten over. This is truly the horns of a personal-professional dilemma. Laurie has a face which just reads “tortured soul.” He also is winning all sorts of polls as the sexiest doctor on television.

In a sequence of episodes that made me want to stand up an cheer, House takes on the marauding new Chairman of the Board of the hospital who wants to run things “like a business.” Healing people is secondary. Ho, ho, ho. The Chairman is a self-made billionaire bully who basically tries to use his imposing size and money to get his way all the time. He offers the rest of the Board a “gift” of $100 million to get rid of House, whom he regards as a liability, not an asset, on his balance sheet. Finally, the Board decides to look this gift horse in the mouth and choose House over all the that gorgeous money. Another pure fantasy.

House is a man after my own heart. Keep it up, doc.

Jerry Graham of the Santa Cruz Sentinal has this to say about House and Hugh Laurie:

Although it didn’t match the ratings of the two ABC shows, "House" on Fox gets my vote for the best new program of the year. The medical series about a brilliant but bitingly sarcastic doctor was the surprise hit of the season. Hugh Laurie will certainly get the Emmy for best actor for his portrayal of Dr. Gregory House. It also didn’t hurt the series to follow "American Idol."

This brief mention from Times Online of Hugh Laurie's father - regarding his Olympic rowing days [excerpt]

One forerunner to Redgrave and Holmes in the coxless pair was a certain William Laurie, who, with his best friend, John Wilson, returned from the Colonial Service in Sudan in 1948 after ten years out of a boat and won gold. But Laurie did not tell his son, Hugh, the actor/comedian who was a half-decent rower himself. “I only got it out of my father by accident,” Hugh said, “when he was very old.”

House is getting several mentions in the press lately. Excerpt from the Edmonton Sun:

Above all, Laurie's House is one of the more irascible characters ever seen on TV. Certainly he is one of the most bad-tempered, sarcastic and misanthropic doctor we've seen, and yet, he is often so witty that viewers can be forgiven for disturbing the next-door neighbours with the volume of their laughter.

From the Seattle Times:

"House" (9 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, Fox/KCPQ): It's been a magical-medical-mystery tour for the quirky new hospital drama. The disease-of-the-week whatdunit is anchored in the vivid performance of Hugh Laurie as Dr. Gregory House, a brilliant medical diagnostician with a painkiller addiction and a sourpuss personality. Sela Ward ("Once and Again") guest stars as a woman from Dr. House's past, stirring up old feelings. Reason to watch: Hugh Laurie, Hugh Laurie, Hugh Laurie.

From the Las Vegas Review Journal:

Hugh Laurie should win an Emmy award for his portrayal of Dr. House on Fox's best new show, "House," airing its season finale May 24. Sela Ward guests as House's old flame.
